ILHA DO SAPINHO - ultimo dia de 2012

Sapinho Island – The last day of 2012

We went off to try crab and ended up facing the apocalypse. At least that was how it felt in the beginning. Loud noises from high sea, several schooners, many motorboats, full blast music, people going around almost naked, lots of booze, colorful smoke, people shouting and dancing. It was the nautic New Year's celebration event, a local tradition. We spent a good time going around that until we could assimilate such an unusual spectacle. The natives from Bahia are very sensual, love parties and are always thinking about sex. The boats divided people according to their sexual orientation: straight women (the Goddesses of Love), gay men (the Dead End) and straight men (The Cliff). A place usually so peaceful became the stage for a wild night out.

Não parece cena do apocalipse?
Doesn't it feel like Doomsday?

Once we got used to all of this, we went on to the crab. All was quiet at Sapinho island. The only obstacle was to learn the necessary techniques to put the guaiamum apart and eat its flesh and entrails. We became as savages, etiquette was left far behind.

this is guaiamum fat, it looks kind of nasty but it has quite an exquisite taste

While I tried to get acquainted with the guaiamuns, I couldn't help noticing the last sunset of the year and the children playing around us, they always make up for scenes worth of the big screen.

We must give our sincere thanks to Souza, the mechanic that saved our small motorboat from certain death. Even if the boat was well past its final days, practically six feet under, hopelessly doomed, Souza wouldn't give up and snatched it from the jaws of death, which sailed back to Maraú, never to return.

TAIPUS DE DENTRO - dia de amigos

Taipus de Dentro – A day for friends

That's a place with no cell phone sign. But it's not really necessary. All you need to do is walk around a little and you'll meet everyone. As it should be, we soon met Prata, a well-known figure there. He's the rescuer of telephones, TV receivers and electricity. Whenever you, by any chance, look up, you'll find him dangling from some electricity cable, trying to fix somebody's problem. He's also the one who has the skills to bring electricity to any corner, even to my cabin, all the way across the mangrove. Whatever you need, he'll fix for you: water tanks, wells, cesspits... He helped us so often that became our friend! Don't even think of building anything there without talking to him first.

more friends: generations meet. After this fish barbecue by night, under the inga tree, we couldn't stay apart anymore

At this moment I didn't even know exactly who they were, I only had seen them around. It's so awesome to get closer to people and have pleasant surprises! Believe me, it's not that easy, most of the people won't even let us get close.
What delighted me in these people, you ask? Their joy and their willingness to know everyone and everything; the ease with which they talked about themselves and told their stories; their curiosity/openness to whatever is different and to life; how they were people who speak and also listen, people who live with all their heart. Guys, I enjoyed you so much!

As we left we stumbled upon the Jardim das Bromélias Community School Project, which has the mission of “offering the best for the education of creative, active and happy human beings, the builders of a better world”.
Data from IBGE accounts that the HID (Human Development Index) at Maraú city remains one of the worst in Brazil, 0.489. The illiteracy rate there in 2001 was of 47.2% of the population (if you do not count in functional illiterates, in which case the rate would go up to 69,9% of the population).
The Basic Education Development Index (BEDI) of Maraú's Public School (1.9) makes evident an alarming reality, way lower than the indexes of schools in Paraíba or Amazonas, which respectively score 3.7 and 4.5 on average.
The complete lack of public daycares or preschools for children between 0 and 6 in the village, the basic school educational crisis and the absence of any programs that give any real support to the families are all responsible for emergency situations. Finding solutions for this is a challenge to be faced not only by the public powers, but also by civilians and the private sector.
Under this context, the Instituto Promar NGO (CNPJ 02438278000170) created the Jardim das Bromélias Community School Educational Project, with the assistance of the owners of the Lagoa do Cassange Lodge.

This is what I consider to be the ultimate life project. The guy moved to the place where he wanted to live at, built his own business from which to make a living, made a dream come true, built the infrastructure to make living there with his family possible (his kids study there), including supporting the sustainable development of the region and improving the life of everyone around.

When we arrived we were met by a placid ocean and crystalline waters. We took a small boat and went from Taipu de Dentro to Barra Grande.
First stop, Carapitangui river and Ro's Bar, breathtaking as always, great food, and prices so high they might be found in São Paulo.
