MUNDO SUBMARINO - Maraú

UNDERWATER WORLD – Maraú

Adorei a 13 sul, e o Bruno, o instrutor.

And to start the year right away with adventures and new achievements, I finally got my check-out. I say finally because I was gifted a theoretical diving course in October 2011, but only got around to attending it in March 2012 in Aqualander, in SP, and now I checked-out with 13 Sul in Barra Grande!!!
I had to brush off on the theory and submit to a test. I loved 13 sul and Bruno, our instructor. Their team is very professional and responsible, I felt very safe the whole time.
One of my quirks is to be a little reckless, I'm kind of a daredevil, but diving must be taken very seriously. For instance, you could end up exploding doing it. It's actually called having a lung distention, and it may prove fatal. As you go downward, the pressure increases and the air inside your lungs gets compressed, so more air gets inside your lungs. At 10 meters underwater the pressure around us is already 2 ATM, twice the pressure on the surface, therefore the air volume is also twice as much. As you go back up, the air gets decompressed, increasing the volume. Therefore if you return to quickly, without leaving plenty of time for this air to leave your body, what is going to happen? At the worst case scenario, your lungs explode!!
Besides that, your blood gets impregnated with nitrogen, which is only going to be filtered out once you're back on the surface, consequently there are limits to the time you can spend underwater absorbing nitrogen and a minimum time you have to stay on the surface, between each dive, so you can get rid of this extra nitrogen. All of this has to be considered as you plan for diving, otherwise it may cause serious illnesses.
If you've got good instructors and good partners, however, none of this will happen and you'll love immersing yourself in the submarine world, where beauty is uncanny and the magic of entering another planet, unique. Besides the peace one finds down there: to start with, nobody is able to speak to you, isn't that great? No cars, no billboards, no cellphones... I loved it.

getting ready for the first dive

It wasn't that easy: the waters, crystalline by the end of 2012, were murky and agitated in 2013. The check-out comprises of 2 boat rides, with two half-hour long dives in each ride. In each dive we must accomplish a few tests, such as: taking the mask off and putting it back on while completely submerged; simulate going out of air and bringing your partner back to the surface on an emergency; keeping yourself at a determinate depth for three minutes; swimming with a compass and remaining in a proper direction; in a shell, nothing extraordinarily difficult, but it requires a focused mind.
The greatest issue was that the waters weren't like the picture above shows, they were really murky, very often I couldn't see past 2 meters away, which means it was very easy to lose every reference point. This was how I found out it is possible to become seasick underwater.

a visibilidade estava assim, menos azul, mais marrom
the visibility was kind of like this, but with less blue and more brown

Fiquei sequelada o resto do dia.

There I was, underwater, about to finish my first dive when I started to feel sick, even though I couldn't understand what I was feeling, since I thought it wasn't possible to get seasick under the sea. Fortunately we quickly went back up, and I told Bruno, my instructor, what happened. He explained that is something that often happens when you lose every reference due to the murky waters. I climbed back to the boat, lay myself down and didn't want to leave it no matter what. Any jolt could be the death of my stomach.
Not even 5 minutes later, though, Bruno, sternly, told me to get a new air bottle. I couldn't believe I would have to get up and focus on that, I'd end up throwing up for sure. But he wouldn't let me by that easily, which I'm thankful for, otherwise I wouldn't have reached my goal.
As I changed equipment and threw up he yelled “Go on, Cláudia, jump!” and I went on to the day's second dive. I was able to do everything I was supposed to and climb back up for more throwing up! LOL Mission accomplished, however, I had completed my first to dives and their tests.
I went back to the boat, laid myself down and wouldn't budge for no reason! I was a mess for the rest of the day.
According to Bruno it was good I had my lessons under these circumstances, it makes everything easier later... That's a way of looking at it...

Bruno pushing us to dive; Juliana, my companion on the last stage, and I!

On the second day of diving I had a female companion, Juliana, who also had been very sick on the first day and was quite worried. I, however, took a Dramin beforehand... I'm not sure if it's because of the Dramin I took or the fact I made a real effort not to lose my reference point at any moment, but this time I did not get sick. Juliana, on the other hand, wasn't that lucky, almost gave up between the first and the second dives, but the chance of getting this over with and never to return for these seasickness sessions made her endure it on! It was awesome to accomplish this together.
On this day it was only the two of us along with Bruno and commander Adriano, who took us to a new diving spot, one only he, as a local, was aware of. Bruno loved it, it was closer, more protected and had a richer flora.

missão cumprida! primeira conquista de 2013
Mission accomplished! My first accomplishment in 2013

Now I'm able to travel by land, by air and by sea!

I could lie and say these were Juliana and I, but to tell the truth, these are not. We didn't get these clear waters, who know on the next dive...

Another option Maraú's underwater world offers is whale watching, a service also offered by Treze sul  possible only between July and October. Something else I'd never know if I hadn't got acquainted with the submarine world.
Every year the humpback whales leave the freezing waters close to the Antarctic continent after the warmer and quieter waters on the Brazilian Northeastern coast. There they mate and conceive their offspring, genuine “bahian” humpback whales.

Thanks to Juliana I also learned that a Bichos e Barões (the Barão Vermelho rock group without its frontman, Frejat) concert was due to happen on DECK, the restaurant right in front of the beach in Barra Grande. Everybody loved the tip, and there we all went to celebrate the beginning of 2013 once more and to close off the new cycle celebration season.
But before all this, we still spent an afternoon in Algodões and watched one more beautiful sunset.
