The itinerary below includes the main attractions of Bhutan, but also some not so obvious. These allow you to have a few days to walk or ride a bike (you can drive if you want), increase the interval between car journeys and give you more time to enjoy nature, people and local culture.

You will need a local travel agency, you can not travel in Bhutan on your own. They will arrange your visa - 40USD. I suggest the local agency Bhutan Tours & Treks Kaze, who assisted me very well. Is possible arrange everything by email and make the payment via bank deposit. They answer quickly and the guides are great.

The basic daily rate in Bhutan is USD250 (high season) USD 200 (low season) and includes lodging 3stars, transportation and 3 meals, you only need cash for purchases ... Basically crafts associated to Buddhism and wonderful fabrics.

Be aware to national holidays and festivals, although many places are closed on these dates, you can substitute by a festival, which is quite interesting. I did not visit the National Library, the Institute of Museum and Zorig Chusum textiles and folk heritage, but I went to the King's birthday, which I would not trade for anything! Some places are also closed during VIP visits.

The religious festival (mask dances) around western Bhutan are as below :

2014 :

- Wangduephodrang (close by Punakha) 1-3 October

- Thimphu : 3-5 October

2015 :

- Punakha : 28 Feb.- 2 March
- Paro : 31 Mar.- 4 April
- Thimphu : 21-23 September.

There will be a huge rush of tourist during the festival period and we advise to book the tour at least six months in advance otherwise, Druk Air seats and rooms will be sold out.

Overnight in Thimphu.

Dia 3 – Thimphu

Kuensel Phodrang, o maior Buda sentado.

Day 3 - Thimphu

Although I stayed only one day in Thimphu I suggest staying one more day. Talk to your guide and choose some of the following activities, some of which may include hiking and biking. For those who can't be seated to long in a car, as me. I think it would be really cool. Also increases the interval between car journeys and gives you more time to feel the country.
Talk with your agency about the following options:

Weekend farmer’s market - The Weekend Market occupies stalls on both banks of the Wang Chhu, just north of Changlimithang Stadium. Vendors from throughout the region start arriving on Thursday and Friday, and remain until Sunday night.

Wander around and you'll find a pungent collection of dried fish, strips of fatty pork and balls of datse (homemade soft cheese). During the winter you can even pick up a leg of yak (with the hoof still attached). The incense area is one of the more interesting sections, full of deliciously aromatic raw ingredients, as well as pink cubes of saffron that look like dice but are used to flavour the holy water given to pilgrims in lhakhangs. The bags of mixed grains and grasses are for throwing in the air during religious rituals.

Across the cantilever footbridge, known as the Kundeyling Baazam, on the west bank, is a collection of clothing stalls as well as a handicraft market . Products include wooden bowls, mala beads, printing blocks, amulets, yak tails and prayer wheels, some of which are made in Nepal.

Kuensel Phodrang, the largest seated Buddha. The huge 50m tall steel statue of Buddha Dordenma commands the entry to the Thimphu valley. See www.dordenma.org for more details on the impressive construction. The drive or bike up the paved road to the Changri Kuensel Phodrang site is worth it to gauge the immense size of the statue as well as for the great views of Thimphu.

Telecommunications tower and zoo - There's a wonderful view of Thimphu valley from the hillside below the telecommunications tower (2685m), high above the town at the end of a road that branches off from the approach to the youth centre. The complex also houses the broadcasting studios of Bhutan TV and is festooned with prayer flags. Don't photograph the telecommunications installation, but the valley is worth a few snaps particularly in the afternoon.

The area is known as Sangaygang and the access road attracts fitness fanatics after work and becomes a lover's lane after dark.

A short distance up the road to the telecommunications tower viewpoint is a trail leading to a large fenced enclosure that was originally established as a zoo. Some years ago the fourth king decided that such a facility was not in keeping with Bhutan's environmental and religious convictions, and it was disbanded. The animals were released into the wild, but the takins, Bhutan's national animal, were so tame that they wandered around the streets of Thimphu looking for food, and the only solution was to put them back into captivity. It's worthwhile taking the time to see these oddball mammals, and the new visitor centre . The best time to see them is early morning when they gather near the fence to feed.

Dia 5 - Punakha

Day 5 – Punakha

After breakfast excursion to Chimi Lhakhang, situated on a hillock in the centre of the valley. It is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, who in the late 15th century used humour, songs and outrageous behavior to dramatise his teachings and due to this also known as 'Divine Madman'. This temple is also known as the temple of fertility. It is widely believed that couples who do not have children and wanting one, if they pray at this temple, they are usually blessed with a child very soon. It is about 30 minute walk across field from the road to the temple. The trail leads across rice fields to the tiny settlement of Pana, meaning 'field'.
