Desembarque e Lake Manyara National Park

Disembark and Lake Manyara National Park

We arrived in Tanzania through Dar es Salaam and situated ourselves immediately.
The first step was to get the entry visa.
The scene was like this: 80 people requiring visa, in a 4m wide corridor, some officials inside cabins and one outside, collecting forms, money (the visa value varies from 50 to 100 USD for tourists) and the passport.
He goes gathering this bunch of passports and takes them to an unknown place; and everyone stays there, without a passport, in full confidence that he will return. Is there another way? No. Half an hour later, the officials who were inside the cabin begin to call the passports’ owners, showing your photo on the booth glass and trying to pronounce your name correctly.
In the end, everything worked out, but we already situated ourselves...
We got our bags and went out to the street, in order to return to the domestic departure to Kilimanjaro.
Once you go inside, you can no longer exit. We had 3 hours left, and we thought about strolling around the city, but we ended up stuck in the departure sector. What remained was eating a cheese sandwich with tomato.
Around 9:00 pm, we arrived at the Springlands Hotel; we were very well received and given... another cheese sandwich with tomato… that we ate with the 1st local beer called Kilimanjaro.

Already in the bedroom, we packed our bags for the safari that would come next. We put in the backpacks what would be used on the safari, basically, light clothes, tennis shoes, sandals, insect repellent, sunscreen, nothing special, and we left the rest of our stuff in the suitcase, in the hotel deposit.

The next day we rode in a land rover, with our safari guide, towards Lake Manyara.
Everything was new, from the hotel front door to outside, the traffic, local markets, people, people herding cattle, until we got to the park entrance.
After the ritual of paying entrance fees, we entered into the animal and plant life.

Lake Manyara National Park is formed by a narrow strip of green forest, bordered by high red and brown cliffs of 600m tall on one side, and along the banks of a bubbly white lake on the other. This surprisingly varied vegetation harbors a large variety of wildlife, fed by streams of water from waterfalls coming from the scarps. It's the perfect place for safari, canoeing on the lake, mountain biking, or rappelling at the external borders of the park.
The dry season (July to October) is the best time to see large mammals, while the rainy season (November to June) is the best for bird watching, seeing the waterfalls, and canoeing.
After we finished the game drive, we were taken to the Kirurumo tented lodge, which provided an amazing view, a delicious dinner, and the first night we slept within nature. Noise? Only wind, birds, and various animals. I began the process of decompression and total relaxation.

Escolhas e Preparativos

Selection and Planning

Dar es Salaam airport, Tanzania first view

Our trip began with my obsession to climb Kilimanjaro. Where did this desire come from? I do not know; maybe from a movie, a magazine, something I saw on TV or simply because it is in Africa.
I began to study the issue and look for someone who could and would take this trip, and who would surely be a good company, because traveling alone is also a possibility and the wrong person could compromise your peace. A few days later my cousin Daniel (37), who has already been a companion on the Inca trail, immediately accepted the invitation and with this little nudge, I took the idea forward. He is a good companion from the beginning, he’s up for anything!
I learned about itineraries, ascending routes, travel agencies here and there, the right time to go, moon phases, equipment, and clothing.
The Kilimanjaro has 6 ascending routes. The agencies here offer the most obvious routes. I looked at all of them and opted for the Machame Route. Why? Supposedly, it was the one that had the most beautiful sights and the best acclimatization conditions. The course lasts 7 days; it is possible to make it in 6 days, but I thought it was better to ensure acclimatization. I did not regret it; in fact, I would like to stay there forever... The topography also allows achieving high points and sleeping in lower places, so you go up and down a few times before going to the top, thus facilitating acclimatization. The descent is made through the Mweka route, which provides  new scenery.

I decided on the route, and I also chose to climb with the full moon (the most correct decision), and before the start of the rainy season (early November). We were on the edge and were lucky; the rain fell exactly the night we were back at the hotel in Moshi.
As 7 days is little time, for one who goes so far, I decided to include a few days of safari. Tanzania has 16 national parks and the Ngorongoro conservation area. According to the proximity and suggestions collected, I chose to visit Lake Manyara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro. We made it in 4 days, but the minimum would be 5 days, and the ideal time would be about 10 days.
There is the option to stay overnight in campsites or lodges. As a Libra, I had a hard time deciding, as the campsites would probably put me closer to nature. But I opted for the lodges; after all we already were going to spend 7 days in tents and without a bath afterwards. It was a great choice; they have a fantastic view; there were animals by the poolside; the service is something I have never seen anywhere else in the world. It was excellent. On longer safaris, there is the possibility of making combinations.

I bought the plane ticket here; after researching the options we chose: São Paulo - Johannesburg - Dar es Salaam – Kilimanjaro, totaling 31 hours of travel, including stops; on the way back: Kilimanjaro - Rwanda Johannesburg – São  Paulo, totaling 17.5 hours.

Choosing a travel agency was the hardest part; I searched on the Internet, talked to several agencies, and most of them were very kind and helpful. The safari was the weak point; in my ignorance, I wanted to fit in more time than it was allowed and some agencies were not able to serve me. After dozens of emails and a few calls, I chose Zara Tours, for the following reasons: emails were answered almost immediately by Festo; there was 24-hour chat for more questions; the payment system was very clear and easy, via internet with credit card, and finally, I knew they were already working with a Brazilian agency, and therefore, they actually existed. The choice was sensational; their service is really impeccable and they own the entire infrastructure required; base hotel, vehicles, tents, etc.

The company’s owner, a woman (in Africa, that's no small thing), Mrs. Zainab, personally takes care of every tourist who has something to comment. All tourists stay at the agency’s hotel in Moshi, the Springlands Hotel, at the beginning, middle, and end of the trip. The hotel is plain, but the service is great and the food unforgettable. It is a meeting point for dozens of tourists coming and going from safaris and Kilimanjaro, sharing their experiences, helping each other. As the restaurant tables (outdoor) are communal, making friends is very easy! I loved it! I became attached to Zainab, Festo, the waiters and waitresses, and the cook, who was keen to meet Daniel's suggestion to include Ugali (typical local food) in the meal.

After everything had been arranged, my concern was the cold and the clothes that would be required; the most important piece of clothing was a Polartec POWERSTRETCH blouse, the Solo X-Power I bought at Half Dome at the seller’s suggestion, Justo, who happens to be a great consultant on the subject; he has been to similar locations and talks from his own experience. The socks are also very important and even wearing them, our feet remained cold overnight. On the night of climbing to the top, I used: a thermal LINER with THERMAX technology, thick Merino wool by Wigwam, Solo X-Thermo leggings, a pair of fleece pants, and a waterproof and windproof pair of pants, the X-Power blouse, 2 fleeces, a goose feather mountain jacket, a scarf, a hat, and boots.

Letícia Vasconcellos, tudo no ECP (Esporte Clube Pinheiros.
A Juliana Zoghaib deu conta do recado!

But there was still one thing missing, which was no less important and could jeopardize the rest; it was necessary to prepare the body… spinning 3 times a week, weightlifting, and pilates.
I also needed physiotherapy, as I had a foot problem ... A thing I would need a lot. Juliana Zoghaib has accomplished the mission successfully! I didn’t even remember my foot on the trip.  I was reminded of this just at the end of the trip by 2 blisters, one in each big toe.
After all that, before departure, I was still kind of tense before the unknown and it only ended when I reached the top of Africa!
I hope this report will help the next tourists to leave here more at ease!

O percurso é bonito e oferece vista para o Monte Meru e do Great Rift Valley . Daí a rota se junta a Machame, porém é necessária aclimatação adicional.

Lemosho Route - 8 dias

Rongai (Naro Moru) Route - 6 dias

Other Ascending Routes

Marangu Route or "Coca-Cola" Route - 5 or 6 days
It is the most popular for being the only one that offers comfortable communal huts for sleeping, equipped with beds and mattresses on all overnights. Bottled water, soft drinks, beer, and chocolates are also sold in most of them. This route can be done in just 5 days, but it is the one that has the lowest success rate, due to the lack of time for acclimatization. Chances increase if the same route is done in 6 days. The same route is used uphill and downhill.

Umbwe Route - 5 days
It is known for its caves. On the first night, you sleep in the Umbwe Cave Camp and there are two more caves that can be visited the following day. It is one of the shortest paths to the Southern glaciers and to the Western gap. Perhaps, it is one of the most beautiful non-technical routes. However, it presents more risks because the area of the Western gap is unstable and rocks can fall at any time; so this route usually ends up joining the Machame at the end.

Shira Route - 5 days
The Shira Plateau is one of the most beautiful and fascinating areas of Kilimanjaro. Depending on the weather conditions, it is possible to get near the Shira Plateau with 4x4 vehicles and reach the Shira Camp (4,000m) in half an hour’s walk. The path is beautiful and offers a view to Mount Meru and Great Rift Valley. Hence the route joins the Machame, but additional acclimatization is necessary.

Lemosho Route - 8 days
The Lemosho Route is one of the most tranquil and unspoiled routes; it joins the Machame route on the 3rd day, at Lava Tower. In rainy seasons, it is particularly inaccessible; climbers should be prepared to walk the last 2-5 kilometers of the road under heavy rains. The travel time to reach the starting point is quite long.

Rongai (Naro Moru) Route - 6 days
The ascent is made by the Northeastern side of the mountain, along the border between Tanzania and Kenya; it maintains a sense of untouched wildlife and is very quiet, offering a different perspective on Kilimanjaro, approaching it from the North. It connects to the Marangu route just before the Kibo camp. However, overnights continue to be in tents. The travel time to the starting point is long.

O Clima

The Weather
January, February, and March are the hottest months, with almost no clouds and little rain. The main rainy season begins in April and runs through mid-June. The temperature is still relatively warm, but the clouds reduce visibility drastically. A large cloud mass deposits snow on top of Kilimanjaro. The driest and coldest season is from late June to August. The sky is completely clear above 3,000m; it begins to warm up again in September. Another rainy season begins in mid-November.
The best months to climb Kilimanjaro are January, February, and September. July and August are also good, but colder. In November and December, it may rain.

TANZANIA

This was not a trip in the sense that I knew until then. Africa is the continent of the present, of being at the moment, in full awareness. It is not a place where one goes to learn past history; it is a place where survival is so above everything else that the present moment is what matters.
It is an experience that goes beyond being thrilled and expanding your own horizons; it is about changing looks and the hearts. I'm quite sure that all visitors I came across are different today from when they arrived there.
The landscapes, of course, are AMAZING, making one to burst into tears, taking him to another planet, and changing any prior reference.

Lions, zebras, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, are there, in the midst of that immensity, calm, zero anxiety, zero emotion, they are there, living, hunting, eating, sleeping or simply breathing. is the hunter has no anger or pride , as the hunted feels no  dishonor, injustice, and suffering; it is just like that; one has to eat, the other has to die. It is the insight of the release of emotions. Being 15 minutes just watching a lion’s breathe, a hippo standing still, also makes you stop, stop inside.

With regard to people, they live in a reality so different from ours, that anything one have read or seen on TV about the place, is infinitely different from seeing and living by himself.
Many children, little food, zero comfort. By the way, I think the word comfort might not even exist in the vocabulary of most of them. Nevertheless, what I saw was children with a permanent smile and always open to a nod, a handshake, any kind of exchange, or approach. They are beautiful, happy, and smart. I felt like hugging tight  each one of them.
They walk unimaginable distances alone on the streets or flatlands, coming and going from school or herding the cattle in faraway places.
With women, the exchange seemed special. I think they could see in my eyes the empathy women feel for each other regardless of where and how they live.

Finally, the great challenge: reach the top of Africa. There were 7 days of discovery, fauna, and flora that I had never seen before; people from all over the world and mainly local people; and above all, the discovery of myself, how far I can get, and how far my mind and my heart can take me beyond my limits!

just a bit of the 75 km walked, from 1490m up to 5895m

Throughout our stay, I felt safe and welcomed everywhere I went to; streets, villages, hotels, and mountains.
